<==Eventual race winner, Corey "Cornbread" Godfrey, (#3), at the start line of the Dirty Kanza 200.
The Dirty Kanza 200 occurred this past weekend and was marked by brutal, hot temperatures and a stiff Southerly wind. 160 riders took the start and braved the rutted, rough tracks across the hardscrabble Flint Hills.
Event directors Jim Cummins and Joel Dyke along with Emporia Kansas businesses made several changes to the event this year including moving the start/finish line to downtown Emporia in front of the restored Granada Theater, having onsite shower facilities, and a beer garden for spectators amongst other trappings.
The 2010 running of the event saw several competitors suffering from the high temperatures which were reported to be a record with a high of 95 degrees. The tough roads also took their toll with crashes, mechanicals, and more. It was also reported that some of the competitors required hospitalization due to the severity of the conditions.
Even so, the event saw 65 finishers, with the last coming in at nearly 4am in the morning on Sunday. (Note, although the Dirty Kanza 200 has cut off times for its three checkpoints, there is no cut off time published or given for finishing.)
The event was won overall by Corey "Cornbread" Godfrey of Lincoln Nebraska in 13 hours and 38minutes for the 205 mile distance. Gravel Grinder News congratulates Corey and all who finished and attempted the DK 200 in 2010.
