Melbourne Gravel Grinders: #4: Winds Of Pain

The "Down Under Crew" is at it again with another Melbourne Gravel Grinder. This time, sans hills! But don't think that'll make it easy. As I am told, the prevailing winds riders will face on this out and back course will have the riders
"chewing their bartape on the way out and then spinning it big ring on the way back. Oh yeah! "

Busted up gravel and dirt roads will greet the riders that dare to go on this one out on the Werribee Plains.

For more info, see the link here and get ready for this August ride in Australia.

Stay tuned for more details, but for now we know that these rides will take place on five successive Sundays.

Hey, who needs football anyway? Let 'em stay locked out and come on down and ride some Minnesota gravel this fall.

Win a Custom Independent Fabrication Dirt-Road Frameset.

This time, I turn over the reins of Gravel Grinder News to Sandy Whittlesey, who is one of the principals of the D2R2, a dirt road randonnee in Massachusetts. He's got some news to share with us you might be interested in....

Observers of the North American Handmade Bike Show may have seen pictures of Indy Fab's new dirt roader:

Franklin Land Trust - the folks that organize D2R2 - are now raffling off the second-ever "D2R2" frame set, a collaborative vision of the ideal rural-road machine.  The frame and fork come with custom sizing and Land Trust artwork, with all proceeds to go to farmland preservation.  Here is the link to the raffle (you need not register for D2R2 to enter the raffle)

The raffle includes a bunch of other stuff - a whitewater/zipline/B&B weekend in the Berkshires along with the usual consolation prizes like shirts, gift baskets, and other bike gear.  But, of course, it's all about the frameset .....

The frameset is distinctive in its understatement.  The geometry is that of a road bike with subtle tweaks for a rougher surface: just enough clearance for 32c tires or 28c's with fenders; a lower bottom bracket for stability (you can't corner as hard on dirt anyway); a compact top tube for extra stand over clearance; some vertical give in the rear triangle; Paul Racer brake mounts; a springy but durable steel fork.  In other words, not the huge clearances and high BB of a cross bike, nor the slack angles of a touring bike, not a rando' bike, nor any super-light carbon that can't take dirt, water, and pebbles.  This is a dirt ROAD bike that retains all the precise handling and crisp climbing of a fine road bike.  And it's not just a dirt-roader - those gnarly bumpy-pavement descents are also turning out to be a heck of a lot of fun, too.

So, there ya go folks! Enter now for your chance at getting a super cool rig. Thanks to Sandy for sharing that with us. Note: No connection with Gravel Grinder News is intended or implied with regards to the D2R2 Raffle, the D2R2 bicycle, or the event and Franklin Land Trust. Gravel Grinder News simply is sharing the info as a way to inform our readers of this raffle. The Editor.
